World record fingernails damaged in car crash

Lee Redmond who held the Guinness World Record for having the world's longest fingernails has lost them in a four-car accident in her hometown of Salt Lake City, Utah located in the United States.

66-year-old Lee was seriously injured after she was ejected from the sports utility vehicle (SUV) she had been a passenger in. It had collided with one car, causing it to collide with two other cars on Tuesday February 10. She is expected to make a full recovery.

Her nails were damaged beyond repair, reported the BBC, quoting Guinness World Records, who also said that Redmond's nails were a fundamental part of her life and unique character. The cause of the crash is not yet known and an investigation is ongoing.

Redmond is credited by the Guinness Book for having a combined fingernail length of 28 feet, the longest on record. She has been growing all eight fingers and two thumbnails since 1979. Her longest of all nails was her right thumb, which was 2ft and eleven inches long.

Before Redmond was named as the record holder in 2006, Shridhar Chillal from India had the longest at a combined length of just over twenty feet.

Lee Chamberlain writes:

I grew up in Spalding Linconshire with my Mum and Dad. My dad has always been into sport mainly Cycling and Running so I grew up taking part in sport regularly.I completed school and joined the R.E.M.E in 1995 as a Vehicle Electrician and when I was 18 I completed the physically demanding Parachute Course.I completed a tour of Bosnia before leaving the army in 2000 where I then joined Surrey Police.

In 2001 I had a near miss at work where I was nearly trapped in between two vehicles. A colleague pulled me clear and if he hadn't I believe I would have seriously injured my legs or worse.

While laid in hospital I thought about doing something different, something extreme and my initial thoughts were to run abroad in extreme conditions like in the desert or the Everest Marathon.

Being in the Police and with family life the time and money to complete this would not have been possible so as my thoughts changed I ended up with the idea of a ultra treadmill run. I search the Internet and found the world record pages and the rest they say is history......

We wish Lee well. He has some training events coming up so keep an eye out for him if you live in the south of England.

In any event, do have a look at his website.

Man sets record for marathon rambling speech

Frenchman Lluis Colet broke the world record for the longest speech after talking non-stop for 124 hours about Spanish painter Salvador Dali, Catalan culture and other topics.

The 62-year-old Catalan and local government worker spoke for five straight days and four nights to set the record in the southern French town of Perpignan.

Three notaries were on hand to recognise the feat which allows Colet to apply to enter it in the Guinness Book of Records.

Colet began speaking at Perpignan's railway station on Monday by reciting the works of famous authors or using some of his own writing. He also spoke profusely about Dali, a painter he admires, and Catalan culture.

Large crowds turned out in support of Colet, who received a rapturous applause at the end of his speech.

"This is a big day for me and I dedicate this record to all those who defend Catalan language and culture," he said, his voice rather fainter after five days of nonstop talking.

Colet had set the record once before in 2004 when he spoke for 48 straight hours but the current record was held by an Indian man who had previously delivered a 120-hour speech.

The Ice Warrior Northern Pole of Inacessibility Expedition 2010

Renowned explorer, Jim McNeill, has just begun preparations to embark upon the ‘last World First in polar expeditionary feats’.

A massive endeavour to traverse the Arctic Ocean from Canada to the Geographic North Pole and then onto the “unconquered Everest” of the Polar Regions, the Northern Pole of Inaccessibility ; otherwise known as the Arctic Pole. This is an incredible feat of endurance lasting 75 days and 750 miles.

For the first leg of the journey Jim will lead a team of trained novices to reach the Geographic North Pole, leaving the last landfall of Canada in February 2010. Having reached this he will continue alone and without re-supply to the Arctic Pole a further 269 miles into the very centre of the Arctic Ocean.

Although the Arctic Pole has never been reached before and represents a true World First, Jim’s real motivation is to convey the reality of global climate change with unprecedented reporting direct from the Arctic Ocean. As he and his team gather crucial climate change data for the scientific community he will be telling the tale warts-an-all with all the trials and tribulations, peaks and troughs that occur when pushing the limits of human endurance and facing the harshest adversities Mother Nature can deliver.

Throughout the journey, Jim will be measuring the thickness, density and roughness of the sea ice, providing crucial datasets to validate the measurements taken by NASA’s Icesat satellite. He’ll also be counting polar bears for the Norwegian Polar Institute.

This will be Jim’s 3rd attempt at reaching the pole. This first was quashed in base camp in 2003 when he contracted flesh eating disease in his left ankle, 24 hours before departure. The second he was thwarted by the disintegrating sea ice 130 miles north of the last landfall, finally falling into the frigid waters whilst he was reporting for ITN and BBC Online (both on board for the 3rd attempt).

It will also be Jim’s 50th birthday in the same year having (hopefully) survived 26 years of polar exploration – all digits accounted for!
